Optphoto & EkHiFi takin' top ranks at BARCADE

To kick off Jess's "30th Birthday Weekend Extravaganza" we made our way to Jersey City to meet up with some friends & family. BARCADE is a bar with a dual focus; an endless rotation of American craft beer and an equally eclectic lineup of classic arcade games. Right up our alley. We killed it on the $.25 machines all night and I even landed in the top scores for the original Star Wars sit-down cockpit arcade game. Good times.

MTV presented a free show this week in conjunction with the airing of a show called I Just Want My Pants Back. The Juan MacLean, Com Truise and Justin Miller were on the bill. An open bar was provided courtesy of Reyka Vodka and Tiger Beer. Truise came on stage around 9:30 and crushed it with his own brand of mid-fi synth-wave, slower-motion funk.

Random Trivia: The film has been shot in Nova Scotia where there is a considerable French community. In the schoolbus scene, you can read ''sortie de secours'' on the rear window of the bus, which is french for ''emergency exit''.

Random Trivia: Kevin Smith wrote the role of Abin Cooper for Michael Parks after seeing his performance in From Dusk Till Dawn. Smith has said that if Parks had not agreed to be in the film, he would have dropped the project entirely.

Random Trivia: The football helmet that Martin puts on at the beginning is a Daniel Boone football helmet - a reference to directer Jim Mickle's high school.

Random Trivia: Writer/Director/Editor Ti West has stated in interviews that The Innkeepers was partially inspired by true events. While filming The House of the Devil (2009) cast and crew stayed at The Yankee Pedlar Inn. Many of the crew members experienced unexplainable events such as doors opening and closing on their own, TVs shutting on and off and very vivid dreams experienced only while staying at the Pedlar.

HONORABLE MENTION:
Paranormal Activity 3 (2011): A malign and murderous spirit continues to dwell within a San Diego home in this second creepy sequel to 2007's chilling Paranormal Activity. Hoping to catch photo evidence of Bloody Mary, the residents soon become victims in their own horror film.

Insidious (2011): Josh and Renai confront terrifying tribulations when their son falls into a coma and his body starts to attract malevolent forces. But when the family moves, hoping to leave the evil spirits behind, they realize their problems are only beginning.

Melancholia (2011): This inventive drama charts the disintegrating relationship between newly married twentysomething Justine and her melancholy sister, Claire, just as Earth hurtles toward certain collision with a newly discovered planet.

Right on the tail end of CMJ, we went in for one more fun-filled night of live music and whatever else may come. Fortunately, we caught wind of Com Truise performing a late night set at Brooklyn's 285 Kent St. The entrie bill was impressive, but Com Truise crushed it in the wee hours with a full set featuring a new live drummer. Worth every penny.

The Innkeepers @ FILMLINC

The following weekend we were able to attend a screening for the new film by Ti West titled The Innkeepers. Right in time for the holiday, The Innkeepers tells the story of 2 young adults that work in a run down, old motel and some of the secrets contained within. Writer/Director/Editor Ti West was on hand at The Film Society of Lincoln Center to introduce the film and also stayed for a brief Q&A after. Being a fan of Ti's work it was great to see the film early and get a little info long before IMDB has time to update it's trivia. Also on hand was some of the cast and crew, most of which had yet to see the completed film until that evening. Spooktacular!

The rest of the weekend was filled with more horror flicks (PA3, Rad State), drinking, dancing and howling at the moon. #Samhain

ULTIMATE PLAYLIST: Mellowdrone

Nostalgia is a funny thing. You never know when enough time goes by to re-live an event in faded memory. Most of my clearest recollections, in general, seem to be fueled by music. You know, that certain cut that dropped when you were going through much different times (#ForBetterOrForWorse). Well my art and media has always been influenced by that trigger. Both visually and sonically I aim to create works that snaps the viewers synapses with a sense of the familiar, yet nearly forgotten. Certain music influences my art as well, but over the years we each create our own "playlist of the ages" filled with our greatest feats and deepest sorrows. Today I came a cross a section of that mixtape.

This golden gem of a CD by is filled with songs from the California-based project-thingy Mellowdrone.

M E L L O W D R O N E (as released on the first few EPs) is, quite simply, the shit. I first came along this band on a CMJ 1999 (?) sampler. A dark, pulsating little number titled Fall On Your Knees. In 2003, Mr. Jonathan Bates (aka Mellowdrone) released a new EP titled A Demonstration of Intellectual Property for free on his website. I immediately got a sense that these tunes were crafted with a certain integrity that spoke in volumes to my creative mind. All the tunes on this little EP seemed to build to a certain crescendo leaving me breathless, yet wanting more. This felt like the artist was more interested in expression over reaction. My eyes widened. My heart sank. I followed Mellowdrone forever.

Below is my own "Ultimate Playlist" for this amazing band. Now, when building a playlist of such magnitude, many factors need be taken into consideration. Song-to-song dynamic shifts, intro's/outro's and a perfect mixture of album-to-album shuffle needs to be assessed. (If your gonna do it, do it right) Also certain songs may have been excluded due a bit by my own overplaying (oh, you do it too) and/or time constraints. However, fear not! 01. (tinylittle) A Demonstration of Intellectual Property (2003) This lovely little diddy plays as an introduction to the band and was no doubt "lovingly recorded in a bedroom".

02. Madison Box (2006) One of the few new songs attached to Box and paints a sad little picture of a girl deserving of a little revenge.

03. Logged Hours Angry Bear (2009) Synth-infused rock loveliness. One of a few times on Angry Bear my ears pick up on bit of The Virgin Suicides. Probably coincidence.

Go Get 'em Tiger (2004)

04. Fashionably Uninvited (Box Version) Box (2006) Lead off single from the band that earned them a spot on The Orlando Jones Show. Also featured on the soundtrack for The Invincible (2007)

05. Motivation Go Get 'em Tiger (2004) This EP showed a different band aesthetic (as well as a bit of humor), but also introduced a new atmosphere which would remain on subsequent releases. motivation = love

06. Elephant Angry Bear (2009) The dreamy sway of this tune defines why I love this band. However, for unknown reason I think of that shirtless guy in that movie playing saxophone with the rad mullet.

Box (2006)

07. Worst Song Ever Go Get 'em Tiger (2004) The first song released (again for free) from the Go Get 'em Tiger Sessions. Great grove and an honest introspective. I remember the live version losing a bridge. That memory, however, is a bit drenched in alcohol.

08. Whatever The Deal Box (2006) This track just cruises right on through. Down for whatever... kinda like that time we got lost for like the thousandth time.

09. Fall On Your Knees (B) For Your Consideration (2005) This is one of the many songs Bates released quietly via mellowdrone.com. A throwback to bedroom demos inspired by existing hymns.

Maquina 7" (2008)

10. Where Ever You May Go Angry Bear (2009) First track off Angry Bear and a triumphant (and at the same time; lethargic) return of the band we love. Makes me wanna bend the stings off a guitar.

11. Amazing Box (2006) This solid rock groove alludes to poor style and ignorance. The kindest way of acting like you give a fuck. At least I think so... I like the bleep-blaap-bloops.

12. Big Winner Angry Bear (2009) I feel Angry Bear has many different dynamics. From big band and classic Americana to straight funk and (what some may be consider) a more formulaic mellowdrone sound. This tune shows all that. Also makes me snicker a lil too... yes at you.

13. Bone Marrow Go Get 'em Tiger (2004) First track off Go Get 'em Tiger. Introduced a new sound and takes my oxygen. I take away a continuation of themes explored in early song like Bite Lip... but like fun.

14. Lady In Her Underwear Angry Bear (2009) A nice change of pace and return to the ethereal bedroom-demo style tracks from earlier releases. That solid beat just feels right out in the summer air.

15. Orange Marmalade (D) demo (2005) Another track released via mellowdrone.com before Box was released. Smooth groove about a sticky situation. Dunno why I like the demo better. It's only like 1.5 secs shorter.

Angry Bear Limited Editon Poster (2009)

16. Drinking Song Angry Bear (2009) The title says it all. Saloon-style swagger, unfulfilled needs and a bit of over-confidence. The haunting melodies towards the end send this track out right.

17. Pretty Boy Go Get 'em Tiger (2004) Sad little number. Not to sure what it's really about, but this song brings back a lot of great memories. One of those times where it feels a bit strange to be nostalgic for something so recent.

18. Button Angry Bear (2009) A nice little time-out. More haunting melodies delivered in ways effective of chilling the soul. This feels like the perfect way to lay it all out on the table.

19. It's So Hard To Say Goodbye to Yesterday Box Itunes Exclusive (2009) Over the years Bates has released a number of covers from a piece of fucking shit banana lover. I make less sense out of that then you do, but this perfect-pitched cover is worth the 99 digital cents.

20. Anglophile Go Get 'em Tiger (2004) All good things come to an end. This chill little instrumental closed the Go Get 'em Tiger EP and seems more then suitable to close this mix.

Althought it seems Mellowdrone is on a bit of a haitus, Bates contines to capture unexplainable frequencies under the monkier Big Black Delta. Mellowdrone has served as an inspiration both musically and on set as I'm always likely to have them close by to keep things dark, introspective and even a bit sexy.

Alper Atrek been busy in the studio since his last release. For our second collaboration, Alper sent me a few WIPs and asked me to create artwork fit for his synth-laced production style. After listening to the tracks a few times I felt the combination of mechanical and organic imagery would fit best with his sound.

RETRO: Azarja van der Veen

A few weeks ago, while shooting on location with the lovely Azarja van der Veen for #Equinox (more info on that soon), I wanted to show her this amazing little piece of property. Located right around the corner from my apartment is this retrofitted lil house, complete with Coca-cola signs, old gas pumps and vintage cars in the driveway. As luck would have it, the owner happened to be outside at the time of our little drive-by. Not only was Steve super cool, but he invited us to stop by during a Car Show After Party to shoot in and around the house. Of course, we took him up on it.

Although it was late in the day and we were fighting for available light, all of this played into the final images. We shot a few different outfits (via Zar), a few different cars and all around the property. Things couldn't have went better and we look forward to brainstorming a few more sets in the near future.

OPT STIMULUS: A Collection of Reference Material

This month I created a new collection of images. This time, from all over the interwebs. OPT STIMULUS will serve as a bit of a photo album of all the things that inspire me. People, places and things that, in one way or another, helped to open my creative eye and inspire me to create something new.

This week I took a few minutes to take a new headshot for 2011. All my previous promo photos have been a bit more direct, but I feel this one keeps a common theme with all my latest sets. This photo was taken in front of my living room windows around 7pm before the sun set. Also, no Photoshop was used to create this image. The existing lens-flares and wash of light was all done in camera.

16. The Work of Director Chris Cunningham (2003)

There were a few reasons I titled this list 20 DVDs that inspire. For starters, I didn't want to limit myself to some Great Movies of All Time when those list tend to be a bit boring and repetitious. There are tons of collections that have been released over the years that show how far a good story and excellent visuals can go. Speaking of which, back in 2003 Palm Pictures released a new series of DVDs created by some of the top music video directors of the time. This series, titled Directors Label, began by releasing collective works from 3 of the best directors in the business. Although all 3 are note-worthy, it was the collective works of one director in particular which was unlike anything every to grace MTV. Chris Cunningham is a music video film director, as well as a video artist, who's works have shown other artist they have it all wrong. Using a mix of in-camera and digital techniques, Cunningham brings his darker vision to the small screen. These videos not only compliment the chosen song, but also become a part of each tunes legacy, having graced the covers of the singles and sometimes even the full album artwork.

In the past, certain songs have been trimmed to create accessibility to a broader range of MTV viewers, however Cunningham's videos sometimes lengthen the song in order to complete his storytelling vision. Having done videos for international artist such as Bjork, Apex Twin & Portishead, his videos complimented each song as well as exceeded expectations of fans all over the globe. Cunningham has also done a handful of commercials, in his signature style, for companies such as Levis and Sony.

Video stills were a bitch to find and I believe this is due to the fact that his work is classified as fine art. He also has a handful of videos from art instillations and even live band sets that followed the few years of his rising popularity. Rubber Johnny, for example, is a strange and dark trip into who-the-hell-knows-what, which is topped by Apex Twins manic-style electro. If you've ever seen one of Cunningham's videos, although you might not know his name, you would know its the same creative force behind it.

Random Trivia: On the video select menu on the DVD, the loud sounds are samples from each music video playing simultaneously. When a video is selected the sounds stop one by one until only a sample of the chosen video remains.

17. The Twilight Zone (1959)

Even if your not a genre junkie like me I'm sure you're aware of Rod Sterling's small-screen masterpiece. To be honest, one of the few things I miss about having cable is the celebrated Twilight Zone Marathon, which I think plays a few times a year now. Thanks to the miracle of DVD and (Netflix Instant) I don't have to worry about that anymore. Although there were a few incarnations over the decades, the original 156 episodes is one of the (if not THE) best anthology series ever made. The series itself was a mixture of comedy, fantasy, horror, sci-fi and basically every other genre you can image. Also, not only was The Twilight Zone one of the first mediums to utilized the "unexpected twist", but the entire series was also a bit of a social commentary, forcing people to think outside the norm.

Some of my favorite episodes force the viewer to question the perception of their own reality. Episodes like "The Eye of the Beholder" tells the story of a woman undergoing surgery to look "normal". By the end of the episode we, the viewers, realize (by typical standards) the woman is beautiful, but her world is full of disfigured, pig-faced humanoids who are all appalled by her appearance. These themes carry over in many episodes and raises questions on what we consider to be acceptable within the comforts (and conforms) of our own society. Considering these episodes aired before some of our parents were even born, Rod Sterling and crew were definitely on to something here.

This is on my list for many reasons, but the majority of inspiration comes from the mixed pot of storytelling within the series. Episodes like "The Sixteen-Millimeter Shrine" deal with an aging actress who lives a life of seclusion in her screening room, clinging desperately to old memories. While episodes like "One for the Angels" take the comedic approach about a salesman who makes a deal with the Death to continue living until he makes one final great pitch. This mixed bag that is The Twilight Zone will continue to be remembered as the first series to make you question your own environment.

Random Trivia: CBS wanted Orson Welles as the narrator/host, but the producers felt that he asked for too much money.

Memorable Scene: If I was to choose just one, currently "Perchance to Dream" (S1:EP9) is one of my favorites.

Memorable Quote: "You are about to enter another dimension. A dimension not only of sight and sound, but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land of imagination. Next stop, the Twilight Zone!"

18. Wholphin (2003)

I have seen quite a few short film collections over the years, but very few have inspired me in the way this one has. Wholphin is a DVD Magazine which contains a selection of short films from all over the world. Created by Dave Eggers and Brent Hoff of McSweeney's publishing house, Wholphin aims to give exposure to short films which have had little or no exposure elsewhere. The format of the DVD alone is quite interesting, as the DVD menu itself (when left as is) contains a strange short as well. The films within these collections range from documentaries, art house, sitcom-style comedies and even drama. Also, Wholphin is used as a platform for known actors to get behind the camera and debut works as a director. The first issue of Wholphin is now long out of print, but it is available through Netflix DVD.

One of the best parts of this DVD Magazine is the range of submissions. While some are submitted from well-know directors (Spike Jonze) and others from up and comers before their first theatrical release (July Miranda), the range of media itself is impressive. Some shorts are simple Black & white, dialog-based scripts, while other are fully animated, mind-melting films. Wholphin also has a tendency to show versions of American shows remade in other countries such as the Russian Married with Children and the Japanese Bewitched, which are all quite amusing.

Although maybe some of these shorts are hit or miss, it truly depends on the individual. We have a great time discussing the themes in these shorts and each volume (13 in total as of 2011) continues to inspire. Wholphin is able to find some of the best student and professional films all over the world and put them in this very cool package. Check out "The Writer" directed by Carson Mel below and you'll see the range of stuff we look forward too every week when we sit down for another issue.

In The End: I love films... it's true, but these days when I feel my attention span dwindling I find comfort in collections such as these. When I'm working on new projects the first thing I take into consideration is practicability. I would never write a story with explosions or a car chase, when I know I don't have the means to film it. All these DVDs offer a practical solution to storytelling, as well as showing the best ways to achieve the most important factor; Beginning. Middle. End.

Last night at Cameo Gallery, Hype Machine presented a last-minute showcase as part of the Northside Festival. Com Truise took the stage around 9:30 and played a line-up of tunes from his debut LP Galactic Melt. This 40 min set, comprised of Haley's brand of slower-motion funk, was capped off by an audience-provoked final jam. Truise responded with the an unreleased track, which has yet to reach home media. Consider us rocked.

It took me a bit to decide which Edgar Wright venture to include on this list. To be honest, both Shaun of the Dead & Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World were both contenders. However, without the creation of this series none of these films would exist. After a short stint in sketch comedy, Simon Pegg & Jessica Stevenson teamed up with Director Edgar Wright and Producer Nira Park to bring one of the finest sitcoms to the small screen. Spaced tells the story of Tim (Pegg) and Daisy (Stevenson); 2 twenty-something's who meet by chance in a local cafe. Both are in need of a new place to live and find the perfect flat in the local paper. Unfortunately, the landlady is looking for "professional couples only". In order to secure the new pad, Tim & Daisy decide to fake being in a relationship and end up making some amazing friends along the way. With Wrights signature style prominent even this early work, Spaced heightens the mundane routine of everyday to a reality that may only exist for people like us who watch way too many movies.

Packed with references to sci-fi, comics, video games and beyond, Spaced is every post-college Gen Xers dream show. Originally airing over 10 years ago on BBC FOUR, Spaced was one of the first shows to take pop culture, heightened reality and sub-culture references and mash it all together. As Tim & Daisy struggle to find (and keep) there place in this world, they are threatened by every movie cliché imaginable, yet manage to be saved by the coincidence of it all.

After years of being in US release limbo, Spaced was finally released on Region 1 DVD in July of 2008 and immediately infected my brain. It was this venture that paved the way for more collaborations from everyone involved (including Nick Frost) and other bit players who tend to cameo in other Edgar Wright releases. Using his distinctive style, Wright also pays homage to other films by borrowing from the visual language of genre films. This pre-cursor to the The Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy films has all the elements that helped introduce this troupe to audiences all over the world.

Random Trivia: Channel 4 commissioned a second series before the first series was even transmitted

14. Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)

Known for his signature visual style and humorous take on life's up's and down's, Jean-Pierre Jeunet presents this french romantic comedy fit for any fan of the unusual. After the success of his first two films Delicatessen & The City of Lost Children, Jeunet brings this smart, heart-warming comedy to the masses. Amelie tells the story of a shy, yet imaginative, young waitress who realizes she takes great joy in helping others. Taking notice of all the simple pleasures of life, Amelie (Audrey Tautou) is just as talented at making people happy as she is as teaching them a lesson in tolerance. Changing lives around her, she attempts to help people from out of sight, while coming to terms with her own isolation.

Although this film was quite enjoyable for many reasons, I esp love all the references to little nuances we sometimes don't pay attention too. Jeunet shows us within the first 10 min of the film that sometimes it's the little things in life that give us great pleasure. Throughout the film, we see that what may seem most important is trivial in comparison to these simple pleasures. Unfortunately, we all get wound up in our own drama and need to be reminded of this.

This film is a leap away from your typical rom-coms. The visual style of this film alone separates it from the trendy American romantic films and places Amelie in a league of its own. Also within the story, Amelie expects the viewer to empathize naturally with certain situations as opposed to lengthy exposition or the recurring misunderstanding motifs utilized in typical romance films. Jean-Pierre Jeunet utilizes color hues and amazing cinematography to create a whimsical atmosphere perfect for any love story.

Random Trivia: Jean-Pierre Jeunet originally started collecting the stories and memories that make up the story in 1974.

Memorable Scene: Escorting a blind man to the Metro station, Amelie gives a rich description of the street scenes he passes.

Memorable Quote: "Life's funny. To a kid, time always drags. Suddenly you're fifty. All that's left of your childhood... fits in a rusty little box."

15. Vanilla Sky (2001)

Noted as one of the most confusing movies of all time, Vanilla Sky is not your typical love story. Based on the original Spanish film Abre los ojos (which is worth a watch as well), Cameron Crowe brings his take on this original story to the US. Known for his past as a music journalist, Crowe has used a mix of original stories and music references in films such as Singles and Almost Famous. Crowe expands on the original story by using pop culture references and a pretty amazing soundtrack to tell the story that is Vanilla Sky. Set in present day New York City, David Aames (Tom Cruise) has everything going for him. As the inheritor of a publishing company, David lives the carefree, celebrity lifestyle. Even though he's been spending time with his former girlfriend Julianna (Cameron Diaz), David's eye is caught by the beautiful Sofia (Penelope Cruz). Sneaking out of his own birthday party, David becomes enamored with Sophia as the 2 spend the night getting to know each other. The next morning, David is surprised to find Julianna waiting for him as he leaves Sofia's apartment. David's world is thrown upside-down and as things become stranger and stranger, not even tech support can help him get back on track.

Although Vanilla Sky has an all-star cast, this film does not rely on star-power to tell the story. Crowe fuses emotion, iconography and even a bit of horror together in this updated remake. I included this in my list (as opposed to the original) because of the amount of personalization the script went through. Crowe (& crew) went through great lengths to fill David's world of psychological turmoil with pop culture references as well as different forms of reality testing. As David falls further and further away from livin' the dream, it becomes clear that it will take more then a big bank account to save him from this nightmare.

I've always been inspired by dreams and the way our unconscious can portray things when our guard is down (aka sleeping). Sure there are plenty of other movies dealing with lucid dreams and repressed memories, but Vanilla Sky stands out from the bunch. Not only due to it's big budget effects, but also from its open ending which leaves the viewer to decide what truly elapsed from the start of the film. I find films that tend to confuse on a first watch are much more enjoyable on repeat viewing more then any other eye-candy based dream film.

Random Trivia: Cameron Crowe says that there are 428 references to pop culture made in the film - 429 if you include one made in error.

Memorable Scene: Poor Julianna Gianni.

Memorable Quote: "Every passing minute is another chance to turn it all around."

In The End: I think all these DVDs show that although we're always moving towards a "better future" sometimes the best times are happening around us. While Spaced may be more comical, Amelie a bit more heart-warming and Vanilla Sky a bit more psychological, all 3 explore the ideal of living in the present. Artistically, each DVD in this list has its own merit, but inspires me from a story-telling perspective as well as ideas for new media.

NEW SET: Melissa Pearce

10. El Laberinto del Fauno (2006)

Written & Directed by Guillermo del Toro

From the writer/director of The Devils Backbone & Cronos comes the sister story to end all indirect sequels. Loosely related to his first 2 films, Guillermo del Toro takes things in a new direction with this Spanish-language masterpiece. If Cronos is his vampire flick and The Devils Backbone is his ghost story then Pan's Labyrinth is his take on folklore. However, del Toro has a unique way of story-telling. While certain film-makers tend to stick too closely to any existing tales, del Toro takes what we know of certain genres and pins them against the actuality of a specific era. Pan's Labyrinth tells the tale of a girl caught between the reality of a raging civil war & the security of her own imagination. Moving into a new home with her mother, Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) finds strange things on the grounds including a Faun named Pan who believes her to be a missing princess of the underground realm. As the war escalates around her, Ofelia must prove her royal linage to Pan by performing a few tasks any missing princess would be able to complete with ease.

Guillermo del Toro takes these 2 worlds and mirrors them against each other in a way that keeps the viewer glued to the screen, but also uses a certain subtlety to separate them. For example, while the real world is enclosed with squares and linear lines, the fantasy world is riddled with circles and curved lines to accent the contrast between these 2 realms. Also, while Ofelia tries courageously to prove her worth as a would-be princess, all adults within the real world hardly ever take notice. All together, del Toro creates an original story in his native language fit for any country.

I've always been a fan of The Brothers Grimm & Hans Christian-Anderson, but Pan's Labyrinth is a refreshing take on folklore within the real world. Perhaps set in a time where magic still exists, del Toro encourages the viewer to come to their own conclusions. Like his other films, del Toro forces us to think back to a time where the imagination can play tricks on a child's mind as well as entertain. Also, he uses a mix of humor, horror and drama to complete this tale; much like the original fairy tales we've all grown up with.

Random Trivia: Björk was so affected by this film that after seeing it, she went home and wrote the song "Pneumonia".

11. Låt den rätte komma in (2008)

Over the past few years, we all know there has been a re-vamp (ugh sorry) on blood-sucker flicks. Everything from shimmery vamps in the sunlight to sequels made some 20 years after the original. However, every once in a while someone is able to breathe some life into the genre without recycling the same overused cliches. Based on the novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist, Let the Right One In tells the tale of a meek 12 year old boy named Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant). This coming-of-age story details Oskar's struggle against a class full of bullies and his relationship with the strange little girl, Eli (Lina Leandersson) who happens to move in next door. While the rest of the town is worried about a killer on the loose, Oskar has to find a way to deal with his bullies and find out what it is about Eli that answers for her strange behavior.

Let the Right One In is a take on one of the oldest sub-genres in horror, but doesn't romanticize or glorify the vampire myth either. Although this is a tale of boy-meets-girl, Oskars struggle is one grounded in reality. I could take this opportunity to dis on the latest trend of` American remakes, but I digress. I will say that the original film has an essence to it that cannot be faked. Beautifully shot, this film takes the awkwardness of puberty and mirrors it against the isolation of immortality.

This film inspired me for a number of reasons. I love foreign films in general for the true escape from the expected. Also, this film has a strong cast of unknowns which always helps retain the suspension of disbelief. (i.e "Hit Girl ain't no vampire") I also enjoy that although this is a period piece, they don't over-do the 80s iconography to help drive the point home. However, the style and cinematography helps place this film in a class of it's own

Random Trivia: The title of the film (as well as the novel upon which it was based) refers to the Morrissey song "Let the Right One Slip In"

12. Antichrist (2009)

To be honest I'm not quite sure what to say about this movie, but I do know I have never seen anything like it before. Written & directed by Lars von Trier (Dancer in the Dark) this film isn't what you think it might be. Not to be confused with The Exorcist rip-off of the the same title, Antichrist tells the story of a couple haunted by an enormous tragedy. After the accidental death of their child, She (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and her husband/psychologist known as He (Willem Dafoe) deal with the aftermath of this huge loss. After She falls into a deep depression, He suggests they head to the place she is the most frightened of in order to come to terms with her fears. It is here in this remote cabin where the man experiences strange visions and the woman begins to manifests increasingly violent sexual behavior.

Part art-house, part shock-cinema, Antichrist is von Triers attempt to make a horror film in the same way Dancer in the Dark was his attempt to make a musical. The narrative is divided into a prologue, four chapters and an epilogue, which adds to the unique pacing of the film. Also, this film was not submitted to the MPAA which explains it's NR status. Not only does Antichrist delve into torture-porn territory, but it is also known for it's overly explicit sexual content including scenes of non-simulated sex, genital mutilation and on-camera masturbation.

I include this film in my list for a few reasons. For one, von Trier shows no fear of exploring taboos, not only in cinema, but in story-telling in general. Also, both Gainsbourg and Defoe give amazing performances in extremely demanding roles. Although body doubles were used for the more explicit scenes, both actors gave 110% to help complete von Triers vision. While most horror movies entertain with the impossible, Antichrist is rooted in reality which leaves the viewer more creeped out then any franchise built on dismemberment and catch-phrases.

Random Trivia: This movie received a special anti-award from the ecumenical jury at Cannes. The jury, which typically awards a film that promotes spiritual and humanist values, decided to award this film an anti-award for its misogynistic views. However, Lars von Trier did confirm in a later interview that he was a misogynist, saying he loved women and understood Her better than Him

Memorable Scene: This flick is full of "WTF" moments, but I'll just say there are rusty scissors on the poster for a reason.

Memorable Quote: "Chaos reigns."

In the End: Ok, so it's hard to sum up all 3 of these films in one neat little paragraph. Aside from being foreign films (although Antichrist is in English) all 3 films are original stories. Most people seem to feel defeated by the idea that everything has been done already, but all 3 of these films take inspiration from existing myths and create brand new stories from them. Without seeming recycled or borrowed, these films show us you can take what inspires you, add some personal experiences and create something new that can connect with people all over the planet.

7. The Maxx (1995)

Watch Full Series: MTV

Back in the early-to-mid 90s, a little cable channel known as MTV was making waves in original programming. Long before [Adult Swim] and The Family Guy there was Liquid Television; an eclectic mix of animated shorts which gave birth to a few of MTVs most notable shows (i.e: Beavis & Butthead and Aeon Flux). Unfortunately, after only 3 seasons, Liquid Television was canceled, but MTV picked up the slack with another show known as MTV's Oddities. Enter The Maxx. Created by Sam Keith for Image Comics, MTV picked up the comic book for an animated adaptation in 1994. Known for it's off-the-page animation style, MTV's The Maxx had a full run of 13 episodes which, unfortunately, didn't receive much attention until it reached cult status many year later.

The story of The Maxx isn't an easy one to tell. In short, the series (both comic and animated) deals with the collective unconscious, the terrible things that happen in life and the way we cope with it. The initial story arc focuses on Julie Winters, a freelance social worker, and one of her clients known only as The Maxx, who is prob the best dressed homeless person ever. Maxx unwilling shifts between 2 worlds; today's world where crime runs rampant in the street and Pangaea; an abstract outback where he protects his Jungle Queen, an alternate version of Julie. Yeah I know, weird right? A bit, but very few "superhero" type programs ever reach the depth of The Maxx, tackling topics such as Suicide, Censorship & Sexism, just to name a few.

Although The Maxx touched base on many modern topics, no hero book would be complete without an evil antagonist and Mr. Gone is one for the record books. Throughout the span of the show we learn about his history, connection to Julie and even a bit about his bloodline, which of course reaches closer to home then any hero would like. Throw in some Spirit Animals, a few thousand Black (& White) Isz & a decorative lamp shade and you have one hell of an original story worth telling in multiple mediums.

Memorable Scene: Overdosing on Pez and Saturday morning cartoons, the Maxx enters a cartoon dream state facing all his fears and eventually escaping into Julies unconscious memory of self. Needless to say, he shouldn't be there.

Memorable Quote: "It's so classic, Maxx. You see yourself as some jungle avenger because in your in real life you're powerless. And I can't blame you. We all need some place to go away to; some place we can be who we should have been instead of who we are; some safe place where we can escape reality. Hide. I know there are things to hide from."

8. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (2008)

I've always had a place in my heart for anime. It's true some of it is beyond strange, but if you've ever seen even one anime film, show or OVA you liked, you know Japan is full of some seriously talented artist and storytellers. Gainax (the studio that brought us Evangelion & FLCL) brings this latest epic tale to the small screen. Known in Japan as Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann or simply Gurren Lagann in the US, Hiroyuki Imaishi directs this tale of a boy who has yet to realize his true potential. Simon isn't very good with people. The girls make fun of him and his co-workers hate him for making them look bad. The only person who seems to care for him is his "blood brother" Kamina, who carries delusions of one day fleeing this underground village. All hell breaks loose when an enormous creature from the surface come crashing down and Simon & Kamina (with the help of a certain scantily clad stranger) attempt to take this beast down and find themselves above ground and beneath what they learn to be called the stars & the moon.

I read somewhere that Gainax considered FLCL to be a test. Basically, they wanted to see what techniques they could get away with when not worried about the pressure of putting out another widely-acclaimed series like Evangelion. If this is true then Gurren Lagann is the fruition of all these experiments. Using a mix of humor, sexuality (esp in the first half) and action, Gainax utilizes their signature style artwork to convey a story that does more then just entertain. Creating characters that people can relate too helps drive the humanistic nature of the show, which proves to be more powerful then any other mech anime. Exploring everything from alternate reality to the power of fighting spirit, this is an epic tale of realizing ones true potential.

So Gainax does it again, but this time with an enormous story arc. Halfway through we jump ahead 7 years into the future which initially gives a different vibe to the series, but by the end you realize it's all the same Gurren Lagann. Any fan of what this studio has done will fall in love with the characters and basically be glad there is something more out there like FLCL. With 27 episodes, 2 feature length films and multiple manga & art books available, Gurren Lagann creates a world which will continue to expand with it's viewers imagination.

Random Trivia: The titular Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann mecha is, as of mid-2008, the largest robot in anime history, standing ten million light-years tall. Our galaxy is one hundred thousand light-years across and the biggest known galaxies are estimated to have diameters of roughly six million light-years.

Memorable Scene: Way too many to choose one.

Memorable Quote: "Who the hell do you think I am?!"

9. WALL•E (2008)

Back in 1995, a small studio from the west coast released the first completely CG movie titled Toy Story. Those of you who are old enough remember know how strange this new technique seemed then. Fast forward through 15 years or rubbish CG movies that rely on star power and hit songs (I'm rolling my eyes at you DreamWorks) and Pixar Studios is still on top of their game. Arguably the best film in their catalog, WALL•E tells the story of a lonely robot on an abandoned planet earth. After 700 years of wandering the surface, making a collection of treasured items and watching the same film on VHS, Earth gets a visit from a brand new robot model who's directive takes all precedence. Immediately struck by her sleek appearance, WALL•E travels to infinity & beyond (sorry... couldn't help it) to do anything it takes to win over the lovely EVE, even if it means changing the course of human life forever.

Written and directed by Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo), WALL•E explores themes rarely seen in animated movies these days. Set many years in the future on a post-apocalyptic planet earth, this stark landscape gives birth to a bleak opening. Also, while most CG films rely on famous voices and sexual innuendo, WALL•E gives the viewer an experience in silent cinema. Sparse on dialog through the first act of the film, WALL•E also touches base on topics such as global pollution, big business and the convenience lifestyle we all seem to welcome with every system upgrade.

WALL•E was the first for Pixar in many ways. Aside from being the first Pixar film to include the new Disney bump, it was also the first to include live action footage, including scenes from both existing movies and footage recorded specifically for the film. Also, WALL•E was the first Pixar movie to be nominated for 6 Academy Awards and the 2nd animated film of all time ever to be nominated for Picture of the Year. Aside from an amazing story, gorgeous imagery and pitch perfect sound design, WALL•E also pays homage to live action film utilizing camera shake and focusing tricks never before seen in a CG film.

Random Trivia: The logo on Eve's chest that appears after she obtains the plant is the same logo used by Disney Epcot's The Land pavilion up until 2005.

Memorable Scene: WALL•E and EVE take a break from saving humanity to share a cosmic dance.

Memorable Quote: "Directive? Classified."

In the End: Aside from the obvious connection of all being animated features, all 3 of these DVDs provide endless inspiration for story-telling. Original, thought-provoking and even sometime a bit sad, all 3 films give us an idea of what is possible if we go with our instincts and thrive solely on what drives us deep down. Also, animated features have always been known for showing us amazing feats live action films couldn't really do at the time. Now in the age of green-screen and CG, it's great to see that some of the most amazing films rely on story more then action and explosions.

Over the past 6 months I've had a few releases (and such) that kinda slipped under the radar so to speak. I figured since I have a bit of downtime these days, I can fill you in on a bit of the randomness that helps keep the boredom at bay and what kind of releases you can look forward to this year.

You're All Those Things...
Poster Design (2010)

Jonah Matranga is a singer/songwriter whose message and music has been an inspiration since I first heard it back in 1998. Back then, FAR was one of the few bands to embrace a positive spirit behind aggressive music. Fast-forward to 2011 and Jonah is still making great music and finding cool ways to share his talents. You're All Those Things And Then You're None is a collaborative 2 part album which invites creatives from all over to contribute in anyway they see fit. The first version was released in Matrangas solo style, featuring just a guitar and vocals. However, the second version features vocal and instrumental contributions from fans & friends all over the world. The 2 versions, while featuring the same songs in the same sequence, sound and feel completely different. As always, Matranga keeps things open to interpretation yet, this time, invites others to roll up their sleeves and become part of the final product.

Having found out about this project a bit late, I decided I would be one of many to contribute artwork. My submissions were a few poster designs which are a vintage take on self-help books of the 60s. With the use of this fitting concept, the design work on each poster represents a spectrum of emotions which eventually streams into a small blank opening, giving the essence of traveling full circle.

The Modern Pin-Up
Coffee-table Book (2011)

Back in July of 2010 after the release of Pin Up Players, I received an invitation to be a part of a new collection of Pin-up works. The Modern Pin-up is a hardbound coffee-table book with 240 pages of the best contemporary photography on the subject. Photographers and models from all over the world contributed to this unique showcase. Famous pin-ups like Bernie Dexter, Sabina Kelley, Candace Campbell, Dita Von Teese and many others are featured in the book.

For this book I submitted an image from our Pin Up Originals series. Which one you ask? Well you'll have to wait and see. The Modern Pin-up will be release by Flo Publishing in May of 2011 and will be available in most bookstores as well as online.

Original Music (2010)

Before the release of Lapse, I had been spending quite a bit of time in the recording studio. I've always known of the healing power of music and through this past year of ups & downs I find creating soundscapes as a sonic equivalent to a therapy session. This track is an example of that. 11.15 was created with only a loop station, some programmed beats and a bit of keyboards, but this simple little tune speaks in volumes to me. In short, the themes encompassed in this track range from loss to nostalgia. The live recording helps capture the specific moment these themes were explored. This song was written and recorded for someone very dear to me. Unfortunately, I will never be able to share it with them.

4. Trick 'r Treat (2007)
USA
Written & Directed by Michael Dougherty
R, 82 min

While it's true most movies set on All Hallows' Eve seem to fall short of the true feel of the season, Dougherty's Trick or Treat really delivers. Based on the short film Season's Greetings, Trick 'r Treat takes things to a new level for genre aficionados. This anthology film (complete with plot twist, common ties between stories and even a fair bit a gratuitous nudity) takes us on a journey through the deadliest night of the year. As fun as it is creepy, this flick has something for all fans of Devil's Night mischief. It's difficult to explain the plot of this movie without giving too much away, but trust me when I say this is a must see for any fan of slashers, urban legend or any other horror sub-genre you can think of.

What good is a Halloween movie without a few laughs? This flick seems like the kind of movie my friends and I would joke about making one day, but Dougherty somehow keeps things together without going too far over the top. Granted part of the fun is that it's not meant to be taken too seriously, but unlike many anthology horror films over the years (I'm looking at you Creepshow), Trick 'r Treat manages to to scare, delight and titillate without "breaking the rules".

I've always been a big fan of genres, horror topping the list. However, this movie not only inspires from a visual stand point, but also a story-telling one. Dougherty does a great job weaving these little vignettes together, using common threads that string you along till the entire film comes full circle.

Random Trivia: Most of the Jack O' Lanterns were made out of either foam or ceramic. An on-set joke was that no pumpkins were harmed during the making of this movie.

Memorable Scene: A confused Mr. Wilkins crashes a party he wishes he never had.

Memorable Quote: "Charlie Brown's an asshole!"

5. The House of the Devil (2009)

When most people think of films set in the 80s, they think neon, leg warmers and the same 5 damn songs that play in every American 80s movie (ala Let Me In). Although this has all become synonymous with American culture in the 80s, those of us who where actually alive then know it was a much different experience. Ti West's House of the Devil explores a reality of the time that goes beyond fashion trends. This slow burner pays homage to the satanic panic film craze of the early 80's complete with bloody pentagrams, extreme zooms and paranoid babysitters. Claiming to be based on a true story in the opening text, House of the Devil tells the story of the financially struggling Samantha Hughes (Jocelin Donahue) who takes on an unusual baby-sitting gig in order to secure rent for her new apartment.

Stylistically, this film does more then just reminisce about decades past; it evokes it. Using everything from freeze-frame credits to similar pacing of other thrillers from the era, House of the Devil takes things back to an age where horror movies were more then just glorified music videos. While this flick may be considered a bore for the ADHD generation of today, fans of the horror that used to terrify our parents will love this throwback to the simpler days of the genre.

Without saying too much about the actual plot, I found this movie to be a refreshing change of pace. The attention to small detail helps create an environment which compliments the vibe of the flick. Although not without a few anachronisms, director/writer/editor Ti West uses a subtle approach to camp with a few intentional errors which always became noticeable in other films of the era.

Random Trivia: The titular house was infested with ladybugs, some of which can be seen in a few of the shots.

Memorable Scene: Basically any part of the final act.

Memorable Quote: "Are you not the babysitter?"

6. Black Swan (2010)
USA
Directed by Darren Aronofsky
R, 108 min

Ok so maybe you saw it, maybe you didn't, but we all know there was no escaping the hype behind Aronofskys latest venture. However, if you can put aside all the overly-exaggerated Academy praise and open yourself up to a creative original story, you might find yourself in for a nice surprise. Completed after a supposed 10 years in the making, Black Swan tells the story of Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman), a timid yet talented ballet dancer who is thrust into a world of psychological turmoil once being cast in the lead roll of Swan Lake. Being reviewed by every film site, including horror fan sites, Black Swan spans genres as a refreshing take on an existing tale, much unlike the current trend of remakes in Hollywood as of late.

Without saying too much about the plot, this thriller is bound more by the traditional roots of psychological horror then by any taboos of the theater arts. With the use of repeated motifs and themes, Aronofsky mirrors (pardon the pun) the original source material, without expecting the audience to know anything about Swan Lake going into it. Also, the double billing in the closing credits suggests we, the audience, should have noticed this story-in-a-story way before the screen fades to white.

Black Swan takes a classic tale and presses it against the back drop of modern society with stunning results. Not quite as "far out" as The Fountain, yet not as slow building as The Wrestler, Aronofsky finds the perfect balance with enough heart and suspense to stay with you for days after the first watch.

Random Trivia: The soundtrack, composed by Clint Mansell is a variation on Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" ballet, but played backwards and in a distorted manner.

Memorable Scene: 2 words: Swan Queen

Memorable Quote: "The only person standing in your way is you."

In the End: I suppose these 3 films have very little in common, however they all are original scripts, which deserves a bit of praise here in the age of "they-liked-it-then-lets-do-it-again". Aside from that, all 3 films work their own sub-genre in their own voice and also utilize modern and traditional techniques to help draw the viewer into the story.

LAPSE: Photo Book + OST (CD)

Concept

Over the past few weeks I put the finishing touches on a concept that has been a long time in the making. Originally inspired by film, I've wanted to release a photo book with an accompanying soundtrack for quite some time now. I felt this would be a great way to explore matching themes with different mediums and create a truly original piece of artwork. For example, if I wrote a horror story, I would cast, shoot and score it accordingly so the entire package would share one collective vision.

After the release of Pin Up Players, I knew I wanted to take some time off and revisit this idea. I took a few stabs at it over the years, but eventually it proved to be more difficult then I had initially thought (hence 2008s abandoned Awaken project). Since 2010 I've been working on more graphic design and printwork, so I decided it would be a good time to run a test on the Book/CD concept now that I had some free time.

Lapse Book

Lapse is a collection of images shot over 5 years and merged together as a printing test. In this age of digital data, I love offering people a chance to hold an original piece of art in hand. The themes within the book (and it's accompanying soundtrack) explore not only nature, but also a recollection of fading memories, yet encourages the viewer to create their own conclusions. This collection of images views as found footage which seems to contain unexplainable anomalies within, leaving the viewer to decipher what elapsed during the time of it's capture.

Part of the excitement of working on this project was creating soundscapes that are not only original, but also compliment the themes explored within the pages of the photo book. For example, a black album cover might suggest a different sound then a white one, so I welcomed the challenge of creating specific sounds to compliment an entire series of photos. The 6 min track, which consists of guitar, keys and a bit of field recordings, was recorded live in my home studio in April of 2011. Check out a clip of the Laspe OST below.

Office Playlist: 20 DVDs (1-3)

Over the next few months I hope to give some insight into the films (and such) that help keep our imagination flowing. Either from a story telling aspect, amazing cinematography or even interesting plot devices, I find most concepts for new photo sets often come from seeing original ideas come to life on the big screen. So begins (in no particular order) my list of 20 DVDs that inspire me:

1. Tuvalu (1999)

Germany
Directed by Veit Helmer
R, 86 min

This beautifully shot experimental film is a bit of a throwback to silent era cinema and evokes similar motifs found in German Expressionism. Sounds weird? To be honest it is, but not completely inaccessible. Tuvalu follows the story of a young man whose family owns a deteriorating bathhouse. Now that the town is being newly developed he must find a way to save the building from being condemned, all while trying to impress Eva, a lovely patron of the bathhouse which he falls for instantly. Sparse on dialog, this film is an inspiration on how a story can be shared across the planet, using the international language of cinema.

This genre bender is directed by Veit Helmer and stars Denis Lavant, which some may recognize from the U.N.K.L.E Rabbit in your headlights music video as well as the anthology film Tokyo! The simplicity of the story is held together by the use of sepia tones and quite a bit of slapstick humor, a staple in the dawning of silent cinema.

I found this movie inspirational on many levels. The cinematography was carefully executed, although quite experimental. Shot primarily in Black & White, color hues are used to separate locations giving each background a life of it's own. Also, the mix of humor, drama and romance flow together seamlessly. Tuvalu is a beautifully executed story told in an original voice fit for any culture.

Memorable Scene: A nude Eva takes a midnight dip with her pet fish, complete with fish bowl. This beautifully captured moment, complimented by the blue tones, not only gives a sense of playfulness, but also freedom from the pending doom looming above.

Memorable Quote: "TECHNOLOGY... SYSTEM... PROFIT!"

2. La science des rêves (2006)
France
Written & Directed by Michel Gondry

R, 105 min

In this follow up to the critically acclaimed Gondry/Kaufman collaboration Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Gondry takes the reins as both writer/director. In short, this is a tale of rejection set against the ever-expanding backdrop of the human subconscious. Stephan (Gael García Bernal) is a lucid dreamer who travels back to France after the death of his father. After a chance encounter with the awkward, yet beautiful Stephanie (Charlotte Gainsbourg), Stephan begins his downward spiral as he becomes unable to separate reality from the dreamscapes he paints for himself.

Any fan of Monsieur Gondry knows this is among his best works. Surreal as it is heartwarming, Gondry embraces his finest in-camera techniques to test the viewer. Forced perspective and stop-motion, along with clever gadgets and quirky dialog, help Gondry tell the tale of his failed attempts at love. Although sometimes seemingly nonsensically, every scene was carefully crafted to perfection, making sense of how sometimes our dreams and hopes can turn against us.

On a personal note, this film spends weeks in my bedroom DVD player at a time. Overkill? Perhaps, but the subtle narrative behind Stephan's dreamscapes drift me off to sleep in ways any great bedtime story would. Also, taking examples from his real life, Gondry helps explain we are not alone in our venture for the seemingly never-executable perfect relationship.

Random Trivia: There are several references in this movie to Michel Gondry's various music videos. Carrying the piano up the stairs is a reference to his video for the artist Lucas's song "Lucas With the Lid Off" which features a very similar sequence. The dolls that Gael García Bernal pulls out of the desk during one of the Stephane TV sequences are from his video for Oui Oui's song "Les Cailloux". The White Stripes song in the soundtrack is a reference to the many videos Gondry has done for them. The giant hands in an early dream sequence are from the Foo Fighters' "Everlong" video. Stéphane's bed and porch are similar to those from Chemical Brothers' "Let Forever Be" video.

Memorable Scene: Stephan gives a TV interview about his upcoming new novel; complete with a band performance and, of course, cat ears.

Memorable Quote: "In dreams emotions are overwhelming"

3. Angel-A (2005)
France
Written & Directed by Luc Besson
R, 91 min

Directing his first Milla J free movie since the The Fifth Element, Luc Besson tells the story of Andre (Jamel Debbouze), a petty criminal whose bad decision making has finally caught up with him. Pissing off basically every hi-profile gangster in town, Andre is at the end of his rope. With only a few days to pay off all existing debts, Andre decides suicide is the only escape. He might have done it too, if it wasn't for the mysterious appearance of the beautiful Angela (Rie Rasmussen) who gives Andre a new lease on life and offers to help him solve more then just his money troubles.

We all know Luc Besson has a thing for the femme fatale; you can go ahead and add Angela to the list of bad ass hotties in cinema. Shot entirely in Black & White, Angel-A is perfection in the medium. I only wish there were more stills of this film online, since almost every frame can be frozen to reveal a picture perfect snapshot. Some of you might need to know this film is in French, however do not let that persuade you. Quite simply, this film is an original work of art.

Although I had preconceived notions going into this (being that The Fifth Element and The Professional are 2 of my favorite movies of the 90s) nothing could prepare me for the personal nature of this film. Besson is known for juggling romance, action and humor seamlessly, but this simple little Black & White film has a powerful punch. As sexy as it is funny, Angel-A also evokes a sense of film noir, yet stylistically keeps things modern enough to keep Besson on the top of my list of favorite writer/directors.

Memorable Scene: Angela gives Andre a lesson in love in front of the mirror.

Memorable Quote: "Do you know the game Simon Says?"

In the end: I suppose the common theme between these movies is that they are romantic stories told in the least common way. All 3 are set against a fantasy backdrop, which makes the viewer question the reality of what they are watching. This offers a great escape from the restraints of every day routine and also helps breathe life into the imagination. All three films are also visually stunning, but not in the oh-so-common-Transformers-type way. They all utilize in-camera tricks which are then lightly sprinkled with CG flourishes.

This weekend I had more creative time with Alexa. Instead of creating something from scratch, we focused on a new concept I hoped to expand on.

Cygnini will be a small set of photos I will create with Alexa, however this time she will be working behind the scenes as not only a MUA, but also as a creative director.

This test shoot was a great way to work out the kinks and get one step closer to our intended vision; a floating elegance which views as if part of a story.

This weekend, right before the Halloween festivities kicked off, I got together with Ms. Johannie & friends. Joey not only did make up, but also played the part of creative director, taking some of the work load off my end.

Sammie, a first time model, did a great job as both canvas and model to help build Joey make-up portfolio and give us some great new shots for the site. We’ll be seeing more of this crew in the near future.

Alexa in Stereoscopic 3D

Last week, after a few short txt msgs, Alexa and I agreed on this 80s throwback to the world of eye popping, color-flawed, stereoscopic 3-D. With a few quick Photoshop touches and some colored cellophane, these images pop right off the screen and get you just a little closer to meeting the beautiful Alexa in 3 dimensions.

NOTE: 3-D Red Cyan glasses are recommended to view these images correctly.

Last week I shot my first set with Isa Voros. This talented model/dancer is versatile in working with different styles and also keeps a very open mind. Once again, Alexa stepped up as Hair/MUA and did another bang up job. Creative as she is spontaneous, we were able to not only to finish Isa's set, but create a new one for her as well. This was the first of many more themes our little team will set up together... before we kick up the Girl Talk.

Last weekend I met with talented model Isabella-Nichole. She was one of the first to answer the casting call for our latest concept. This throwback to 60’s psychedelica was inspired by a recent surge of 60s sexploitation flicks and the swirling atmosphere of acid rock in optphoto-land.

Hair and makeup was provided by AlexaNicole. This inspired hairdresser/MUA also doubles as a model. Our team worked great together and both girls were awesome in picking up on the themes, enjoying the fun of it, and still getting the job done.

All photos in this set were taking digitally, however with minimal touch-ups. Each 2 second exposure was mixed with a few pop flashes as well as a couple projectors. This also proved to be a workout for Isabella, as she would race back-and-forth between “POSE-now-DANCE” for at least 40-60 frames. Great job team!

This past week we set up a shoot with my good friend Joana of Union County, NJ. This was my second shoot with Joana, but our first time working in the studio together and once again Kimberly Swayze did all the Hair & Make-Up. The concept behind this shoot was a bit different then just the usual color schemes and props as of late. Inspired by "Heavy Metal", I constructed the background out of newspapers and 70s porn clippings, Kimberly helped with wardrobe and Joana killed it with a the right mix of attitude and confidence.

This week we set up our second shoot with Pin Up Players model & local tattoo artist Azarja Van Der Veen. Zar is not only a talented artist, but she's also an excellent collaborator. Comfortable with suggesting ideas as she is in front of the camera, Zar emotes with a subtlety that keeps things simple, yet compelling.

Kimberly Swayze stepped up as make up artist once again and we used similar themes as in our recent Quicksilver set. Kimberly's color coordination was the perfect combination for the existing color scheme and she has an amazing eye for matching individuals with their best looks.

For this new set we used a mixture of colors and textures to create a sense of nostalgia with a modern finish. However, this is the first time the hues were done in-camera, using colored filters projected by our studio lighting.

Introducing: Susan Coffey

Back in March of 2009 during Casting Call: Philadelphia I met with the talented and South NJ native Susan Coffey. She was the last of 13 different shoots over 3 days, but we were in good spirits during our first shoot together. Together we hit a few different locations within walking distance, but the most essential piece of our backdrop turned out to be the setting sun.

Although "Susan in the Sun" isn't a new series, I recently went back into the originals to test a new technique; a slight variation on our existing "Aged Print" look. This series had the luminosity and emotion I was looking for and makes a great edition to the ever-growing Optimism Photography portfolio.

Art Lives Studio & White Lotus Home presents "Piti Piti Plein Kay" at Lotus Studios Gallery. The title was named by exhibiting artist, Turgo Bastien, and is a Haitian expression, which means that even a tiny light can fill an entire house.

Featuring a diverse and engaging array of small works of art produced sustainably, this exhibit takes a look at how a small, thoughtful impulse, like a seed, can hold great meaning and potential to transform while sharing with viewers and collectors a snapshot of the artists' Caribbean heritage.

This event is a part of Art Lives Studio’s Haiti Relief Benefit program and will support Art Creation Foundation for Children (ACFFC), a wonderful non-profit arts organization created for education and personal growth of children (6 - 11 years) in need in Jacmel, Haiti. Introducing: Felicia Fatale

In our first set together, Felicia Fatale and I created this throwback to Femme Fatales of the 30's & 40's. With the use of dramatic lighting and a bit of soft focus, we were able to give a modern twist to this Film Noir homage. Props by Feldt Design.

Using old stills from a few of the top leading ladies of 1940s cinema as reference, this new series is 1 of 3 new sets shot in our home studio. The 2nd set is a Pin Up inspired series and the 3rd is set of headshots. Makeup by Kimberly Swayze.

Anniversary Set

Casting Call: Philadelphia

Optphoto broke some of our own records this wknd. Over the past 2 weeks I booked 3 days worth of shoots in Philadelphia. 13 girls to be exact. The purpose of this little venture was to bulk up my portfolio and branch out to new areas. This also helped me think outside this lil box called Morris County, meet new people, get into adventures and hang with a few good friends.
